With HEVC, about a full day's worth of video will fit in the same 256 gigabyte iPhone 13 Pro model, demonstrating how big of a difference this makes. It's unlikely to record that much at once unless shooting a live event uncut, but several short videos will add up quickly. Standard HEVC video is still great and should be the default for most videos. That means a 256 gigabyte iPhone 13 Pro, the minimum storage required to enable ProRes, is likely to be completely filled in less than 45 minutes. An entire gigabyte is needed for just ten seconds of 4K resolution video when using ProRes. The most problematic might be the amount of storage used. There are a few trade-offs that come with this demanding method of storing video. ProRes is a very low-compression video format that dramatically reduces the artifacts and noise that might otherwise appear in a video using Apple's usual high-efficiency video coding (HEVC). While slow-motion video captures up to 240 frames per second with any of the iPhone's cameras, even the front-facing camera, resolution drops to 1080p in order to keep up with such a fast pace. Recording the best quality video is much more demanding than capturing a single photo since the same process has to happen 30 to 60 times per second for standard video. Top-quality video is the milestone to reach now that smartphones have largely replaced the need for a point-and-shoot camera and, in some cases, rival the much larger and more expensive DSLR cameras. The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max have the ability to record video in Apple's ProRes format and the quality will be amazing, but 4K resolution video consumes a staggering one gigabyte every ten seconds.
